What mattress is better than Saatva?
Established in 2010, Saatva specializes in direct-to-consumer luxury bed mattress under 3 brand names: Saatva, Loom & Leaf, and Zenhaven. Note: Saatva recently upgraded the Zenhaven, altering the kind of latex used in its foam layers. The Zenhaven now features Dunlop latex, instead of Talalay latex; learn more about the distinctions listed below. We plan to evaluate the new version soon and will update this guide with our impressions.
The Zenhaven is also flippable (the High-end Plush side feels medium-firm, while the Mild Company side feels a bit firmer), which may show useful if you’re not sure what you prefer or if your needs change over time. This is not a traditionally soft bed mattress, but it uses a supple cushion, great edge support, and a subtle springiness.
For this evaluation, I slept on the Saatva Classic, the Loom & Leaf, and the Zenhaven mattresses for numerous weeks in my own home. These mattresses were also assessed in our group tests performed for Wirecutter’s guides to the best foam bed mattress and the finest innerspring bed mattress. As Wirecutter’s senior personnel author for sleep, I have actually talked to ratings of specialists in the bed mattress industry and in materials science; gone to dozens of mattress factories, shops, and display rooms; and read the fine print on specifications, warranties, and return policies. Most recently, supervising editor Courtney Schley examined the Saatva Latex Hybrid in her house for a number of weeks.

We haven’t yet done a deep dive into the “natural” claims of Saatva or of other “environment-friendly” brands. But we do know that the business uses thistle pulp or natural wool as a flame retardant (as opposed to chemicals or fiberglass) and only natural cotton (instead of synthetic blends) in its covers. As do other online bed mattress companies, Saatva promotes such additionals as zoned layers for “ideal spinal column support”; we’re less amazed with those features and more appreciative of Saatva’s responsive client service and resilient foams and coils.
